Meletrix Boog75 Magnetic Keyboard Review

Overview

Known for their enthusiast level mechanical keyboards with entry level pricing, Meletrix has entered the gaming keyboard scene with their own Hall Effect keyboard. Meletrix Boog75 comes prebuilt in two options: Shockwave, a black case with teal colored engravings, and Induction Coil, a white case with copper colored engravings. 

Why The Boog75?

So how does the Boog75 stand out amidst the recent plethora of Hall Effect keyboards? The Boog75 offers custom keyboard enthusiast level quality with gaming keyboard aesthetics and functionalities. In its stock configuration, the Boog75 has no competition with other gaming keyboards currently in the market in terms of its case and sound quality. The Boog75 comes with factory lubed Gateron KS-37B switches that feel smooth and sounds clean with no rattle or scratch. The Boog75 also comes with factory lubed PCB mounted stabilizers which provides relatively more stability than plate mount stabilizers and gives another enthusiast level of thought into this HE keyboard. If you are looking for a gaming that has competitive gaming capabilities as well as an enthusiast level build quality, then the Boog75 is one of the best options currently in the market.

Unboxing Experience

The Boog75 comes in a black hard shell carrying case with some hardware and a threaded coiled cable.

Straight out of the box in its stock form, the Boog75 comes prebuilt with Gateron KS37B magnetic Hall Effect switches and high-quality WS doubleshot PBT keycaps. The Gateron KS37B switches that come slightly factory lube feel smooth and comfortable to type on. The WS doubleshot PBT keycaps are 1.6mm thick and have clear and consistent legends. The keycaps feel smooth with some slight texture to help your fingertips grip each key.

Stock Switch Feel and Sound

The Boog75 comes prebuilt with Gateron KS-37B magnetic hall effect switches. 

Some of the special features of the Gateron KS-37B include: a dual-rail design for stem stability, a led diffuser, and an extend bottom housing stem cavity like the ones in MX style switches for additional stability. 

The factory lubed stock Gateron KS-37B in the Boog75 sounds clean and feels smooth, where most other stock HE gaming keyboards fall short. 

Design

The Boog75 stands out amongst HE gaming keyboards especially in its design elements. The Boog75 uses the same case design as the Zoom75, which was designed to be a premium custom keyboard at a more affordable price point. 

The Boog75 comes prebuilt with sound modifying foams installed as well as switches and stabilizers factory lubed and tuned to provide premium experience straight out of the box. 

The design elements live up to the high quality Meletrix puts out in their custom enthusiast keyboards, while adding some stunning and eye-catching engravings all around the case to give the Boog75 a more gaming keyboard aesthetic. 

Typing Experience

The Boog75 sets the standard for HE gaming keyboards in terms of typing experience. The Boog75 offers a typing feel and sound that lives up to the Meletrix quality that we have seen in their previous custom keyboards. The Boog75 has a 22.14mm front height, which might seem tall for some, but 5 degree typing angle helps to offset the taller front height. The gasket performance provides a solid but soft typing experience, since too much flex would cause issues with the sensitivity of Hall Effect switches.

Although the Boog75 also utilizes the same gasket mount that is used in the Zoom75, the tying experience on the Boog75 is not nearly as flexible as the Zoom75 but for a good reason. Since the Boog75 uses magnetic switches, having too much varying movement could interfere with the precision of the switches. Therefore, the Boog75 was made with optimizing the performance of the magnetic switches in mind while trying to retain as much of the comfortable typing experience from gaskets.

Software

Boog75 uses Meletrix's own web based proprietary sofware found at this link boog75.meletrix.com. No downloable software available. 

Here are some current features of the Boog75 software:

• 3 custom profiles

Meletrix is continuously updating their software and has mentioned new features soon to come to their software.

Things to Note

The Boog75 is currently only compatible with the Gateron KS37B versions of magnetic Hall Effect switches. These include: Gateron KS-37/37B, Gateron Magnetic FOX Switch and Gateron Dual-rail Magnetic Jade Mini E Switch.

Like most other HE keyboards, the Boog75 supports only wired connectivity to optimize the polling rate. 

Before installing magnetic hall effect switches on your keyboard, check and ensure they are compatible with your keyboard. Depending on the design of the board, incompatible magnetic switches may damage the HE PCB. 

Future Projects

The Boog75 uses the same case as the Zoom75, so if you wanted to use the Boog75 as an enthusiast keyboard instead of a gaming keyboard it would be possible to do so by swapping out the HE module in the Boog75 with a mechanical module from the Zoom75 line.

Meletrix will be releasing the Zoom65 V3 which they mentioned would also include the option to swap out the mechanical module with a HE module to use with Hall Effect switches for gaming.
